Keeping your Self Storage unit in San Jacinto Pest Free

With the recent addition of 8×20 self storage units to our San Jacinto, CA facility. When it comes to self storage there is one thing nobody likes inside of their storage unit and that is rodents, insects and spiders. Here are some tips you can follow to ensure your storage unit in San Jacinto remains free of any unwelcome visitors.
1.) Avoid Storage Food Items: Probably the most important and easiest to follow, avoid storing food items at all costs. For most storage centers these are forbidden because of their propensity to attract insects and vermin. However, make sure all items that may have held food at one point are washed and sanitized (the scents alone are what will attract the unwelcome visitors).
2.) Use Hard Plastic Boxes: Opt for hard plastic boxes and other tightly seal-able containers to protect your belongings. These will not only be great for stacking, but rodents will not be able to chew through plastic as they would cardboard boxes.
3.) Wrap your upholstered furniture: Wrap your upholstered furniture and any soft items that you can’t store in boxes in plastic. This will ensure that if mice or rats happen to get into your unit, they won’t damage the fabric with their claws and waste. You’ll also help protect your belongings from moths and other insects.
4.) Check Your Belongings: One of the easiest way to find unwanted rodents or insects inside of your storage unit, is by moving the rodents and insects along with your belongings. Give everything you plan on storing a good once-over to make sure there aren’t any critters hiding in your belongings. This is especially true if you are simply moving items from one storage location to another (or from a garage).
5.) Prep Your Unit: Prepare your unit for long-term storage by equipping your unit with rat poison, mouse traps and fly tape to catch any intruders. You can also place cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil in desk drawers, trinks and cabinets to deter pests.
